Fairy Tale Theater

Through the character archetypes that are present in all fairy tales (princesses, knights, villians, sidekicks, comedians, animals, and many more) we will begin a journey through theater, the world that we live in, and the mature subject matter that we encounter in our daily lives. Comedy, tragedy, philosophy, and foolery, you name it- we will explore it! Hansel and Gretel, Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty and more will explored in this performance based workshop.

Acting for the New Actor

What makes a "good" actor? Getting the lead role? Memorizing lines? Making people laugh, or cry? In this class, students will play games and exercises from the theories of Viola Spolin, Augusto Boal, and more who share the understanding that good actors are socially aware and conscious people, regardless of their age or experience. Students will use their bodies, voices, and imaginations, to explore what it means to play a character, to tell a story, and to be part of an ensemble. They will use understanding and compassion in creating characters and scenarios that they will perform at the end of the session.

The Shakespeare Toolkit

Even after 400 years, you can find Shakespeare everywhere you look. There are days when it seems you can't even turn on the television or flip through a magazine without finding the bald guy lounging about. Shakespeare's plays, though? Those can be pretty intimidating. But with the right tools, Shakespeare is easy. In fact, Shakespeare does a lot of the work for you. Using these tools, we'll unlock the secrets of Shakespeare's text through acting workshops,  creative scene work, and collaborative theatrics.

Improv!

In order for a performance to affect an audience on a human level, the performances must come from a human place.  Our lives are written without scripts; it is an actor's privilege and responsibility to create a character that operates independent of a script.  Students will unlearn unuseful habits and integrate new, fun, and daring ways of creating characters based on the art of improvisation.  Classes will include movement work, verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, and an understanding that all scenes, no matter how long or short, have a beginning, middle, and end.  The class will culminate in a completely improvised narrative against the backdrop of short-form improvisation games.

Safe Screams & Dangerous Whispers

“We all have stories of love, loss, adventure and redemption.  When we share our stories, we heal, transform and connect.”–Heidi Arneson

Participants playfully collaborate to create an original autobiographical performance about their own lives, while building theater skills in voice, movement, focus, writing, trust, multiple-character-acting, self-awareness and visualization. Each class begins with a series of vocal, physical, writing and acting exercises, (designed to strengthen and focus each individual’s powers of expression), and ends in a live performance of the freshly generated material. The final class culminates in a public performance of the collaborative autobiographical work. The overall goal of the class is to build intuitive, creative and expressive muscles as we create a safe, healing space to speak personal truth in ways which generate growth and community.

Veteran Performance Artist Heidi Arneson, seasoned expert at creating autobiographical performance, leads this workshop for stretching acting skills, increasing self-awareness and building understanding. Ms. Arneson honed the class over the past 17 years, as a way for both professionals and laypeople to expand creativity, express truth and share life-stories. She has led the workshops for college students, professional theater artists, performance artists, visual artists, writers, dancers, poets, singers, inner city youth and male inmates.
